Via Antwerp Top-Tip: Kunsthal Extra City
Housed in a former Dominican church on Provinciestraat, Extra City is one of Antwerp’s most distinctive spaces for contemporary art. Its programme focuses on alternative forms of visual art, bringing together artists, cultural organisations and the city around work that responds to what is happening in society today.
In other words: exactly the kind of place we like sending curious guests.

Coming up: The Image Generator
The new cultural season kicks off from 17–19 September with the eighth edition of The Image Generator.
This year’s theme is sound, with an international group of artists exploring the space between visual art, performance and sound. Across three days, Extra City’s former church becomes a temporary festival landscape of installations, performances, sound works and artistic interventions — one you can wander through and experience at your own pace.
Expect work from artists including Younes Baba-Ali, Cally Spooner, Benjamin Verdonck, Charlotte Bouckaert, Bart Lodewijks and many more.
The Image Generator
17–19 September 2026
Kunsthal Extra City
Provinciestraat 112, Antwerp

Next up: Guillaume Bijl
From 24 October until 27 December, Extra City presents Feestelijke Herdenking van het Graafschap Watou, a major project by the late Belgian artist Guillaume Bijl.
Originally presented just once, at Kunstenfestival Watou in 2002, the work will be reconstructed for the first time inside Extra City’s Dominican church. The installation combines a fictional historical museum, theatrical scenery and live performances, constantly playing with the line between fact and fiction — something that runs throughout Bijl’s work.
It is also the first presentation of Bijl’s work since his death in 2025.
Art, then a place to land
For us, a stay at VIA should never end at the hotel doors. Antwerp is full of artists, independent spaces, neighbourhoods, restaurants and people worth discovering. and partnerships like this help us connect our guests with more of them.
So whether you’re in town specifically for The Image Generator, coming to see Guillaume Bijl later this autumn, or simply looking for something interesting while you’re here: put Extra City on your Antwerp list.
And when the art is done, you know where to find us.
